• Information is Power

  Divorce, separation, incarceration, deployment and other family related issues such as child support, child custody, and visitation may be difficult. Having the appropriate custody and child support attorney, or mediator to help you negotiate a successful outcome for you and your children will make a big difference.

  When contacting anyone, it will be helpful for you to briefly explain your situation, why you need assistance, which party you are, and where you are filing your case. Try locating a resource who is familiar with and believes in your ultimate goal, maintaining an ongoing relationship with your children after the divorce or separation. Keep in mind, it is always better to resolve issues related to custody, visitation and support directly with your co-parent than to go to court.

• Domestic violence hotlines and resources

  The National Domestic Violence Hotline is staffed 24 hours a day by trained counselors who can provide crisis assistance and information about shelters, legal advocacy, health care centers, and counseling.

  The Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network (RAINN) will automatically transfer you to the rape crisis center nearest you, anywhere in the nation. It can be used as a last resort if people cannot find a domestic violence shelter. 1-800-656-HOPE
